Godzilla vs. Kong is something I’d thought would probably never get a massive big budget blockbuster adaptation but here we are with this beast of a film hitting cinema screens this week!
It’s been a bit hit or miss for the Monsterverse since it started with Godzilla, but I’m happy to report that with Godzilla vs. Kong it seems to be finally heading in the right direction.
Godzilla vs. Kong brings exactly what you would expect from a film with that crazy of a title, a true showdown of legends at a massive scale with endless cities and navy fleets to destroy.
This time around Adam Wingard has taken on director duties and it really feels like he understands the not always serious legacy of both these legendary titans.
While some of the human focused parts do drag a little, its to much less of a degree than previous entries and as a whole the film seems to embrace the inherent silliness of the source material with open arms, producing a genuinely enjoyable bombastic blockbuster filled with little nods to the movies of old and importantly much cleaner and well staged sequences with plenty of decent Visual Effects to boot!
The only real criticism I have here is that I do wish the score could have been louder, as it often felt like it was lost in the sound of loud booms, roars and all manners of destruction.
When it comes down to it Godzilla vs. Kong succeeds in being a pure popcorn blockbuster to take the family to, its not overly complicated and you don’t have to be invested in the previous films to have a great time watching, and yes it does come with some fun surprises thrown in for good measure.
Thanks to Universal Pictures Australia & Warner Brothers Australia for the invite.
